Using :first-of-type for guide target element

Hello,

I have a list of items in a table. Some of the items have an icon and some don't. I want to be able to add a badge/tooltip to the first icon in that list. Can I use the :first-of-type selector to do so? I cannot control which row of the table will have the icon, hence the request to target the first one visible.
