Any best practices for using videos in guides?

We're exploring the potential of uploading videos in our guides to help with user onboarding and training. I'd be interested in comparing notes with anyone else who is using videos. Are you creating them in-house or using a professional service? Any tips or best practices?

  • Hey Bridget!

Personally, you can get by without professional services for user onboarding and training videos. You want them to be professional, but most of that can be done in-house with an okay mic (if you want to boost the quality). My quick tips are:

    1. Shorter videos are better for keeping someone's attention (1-3 minutes)
    2. Videos should be use case-specific, I.E. don't just show them how to create a guide, walk through a real use case to help them understand it.
    3. Share your screen and capture via something like QuickTime and upload it to youtube. (Or you can even record on something like loom and upload that file to YT).

    Hope that helps!
