Can Pendo set `null` or `empty string` values to identifiers?

Hi everyone!

We observed that pendo init script that we can set account_id to `empty string`.

Can someone confirm in real-world if Pendo can set `null` or `empty string` value to identifiers like visitor_id, feature_id, account_id, page_id etc.?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Brian,

Account ID can be set to null or an empty string to indicate that there is no account tied to a visitor for that event.  However, trying to send null or an empty string for visitor ID would not work.  The agent would fall back to the value saved in local storage/cookies.  Internal identifiers like featureId, pageId, guideId, etc. will never be null.

  • Thanks Alisyn for your response!

One follow up question, are null and empty string same in this context? If not, then is there a possibility getting null for one record and empty string for other?

  • Hey Brian,

In general in the API responses?  They are considered differently.  And yes, depending on the field and your inputs, you may expect to see either null or an empty string returned.
