Default Turn off Guides for First Time Users

Is there a way I can hide all guides for the first time login. I would want to do this account wide.

Right now we are using pendo for product announcements. It is very time consuming to create a segment for reach announcement only to exclude first time users, and with many marketing and product team users publishing guides, this piece is often forgotten, creating a confusing and messy onboarding experience for new users.

Is there a way pendo can help standardized this with an account level exclusion, or an option in segements to just exclude first time users without doing first visit before date (to get active users). Does the "is empty" rule in segments work in this case to identify new user?

  • Hi Devin! You could create a segment called 'Visitors on their first day' which targets visitors based on the 'First visit' field. This is a timestamp set in Pendo when we receive our very first event from a visitor. You could then reference that "Visitors on their first day" segment via nested segments whenever you are creating a guide. I’ve attached some screenshots - notice how I'm using Nested Segments, specifically 'segment is not equal to.’

If you want to approach this more programmatically and have something automatically block ALL Pendo guides for first time users, it will require dev effort.

If you decide to go that route, I recommend showing your devs this article: https://support.pendo.io/hc/en-us/community/posts/38074217036059-Tech-Note-Best-Practices-for-Blocking-Pendo-Guides. Specifically the option that says 'Block all guides in a particular environment' which recommends using guides.disabled: true.
