Developer's guide to installing the Pendo Mobile SDK

Last updated:

This article is intended for developers and provides guidance on planning and implementing a successful installation of the Pendo SDK (software development kit).

View supported mobile frameworks

Pendo supports both low-code tracking and Track Events for collecting data. For information, see Supported mobile frameworks and operating system versions.

For detailed instructions on installing each framework, see Pendo's GitHub site.

Migrate from SDK version 2.x to version 3.x

To ensure optimal performance and security, and access to the SDK’s latest features, it's recommended to migrate from Pendo SDK version 2.x to version 3.x.

By migrating to the new version, you can enjoy improved performance, better compatibility with other software and devices, and peace of mind knowing that your system is up to date and protected against potential threats.

For instructions on how to migrate to SDK version 3.x, see Migrating from version 2.x to version 3.x on Pendo's GitHub site.

Install the Pendo mobile SDK

The Pendo mobile SDK provides low-code, retroactive analytics across all of your app versions, as well as lightboxes, tooltips, and multi-step walkthrough guides built with Pendo's Visual Design Studio.

  • The integration takes three lines of code.
  • The SDKs start collecting analytics after a successful installation. This allows Pendo to automatically track any user action in your app, providing insights without prior app tagging (retroactive analytics).
  • Analytics and guides are agnostic to app versions, allowing you to make updates without needing to change the way Pendo tracks user interactions on mobile apps.
  • Utilize multi-app paths and funnels to track users throughout their product journey on mobile and web.

For detailed installation instructions for the Pendo mobile SDK for each individual framework, see Pendo's GitHub site.

Install the Pendo mobile SDK with an AI coding assistant (beta)

If you use an AI coding assistant like Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex, you can use a skill to install the Pendo mobile SDK for you. The skill covers native iOS, native Android, React Native, Expo, Flutter, and MAUI apps.

Note: This integration is in beta. If you run into problems or have feedback, open an issue on Pendo's GitHub site.

For the latest instructions, see Install via Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex (Beta) on Pendo's GitHub site.

Before you start, have your app's Public App ID and Scheme ID ready. You can find both on the App Details tab of your app's settings. For more information, see Mobile application settings.

Install with Claude Code

You don't need to clone the repository.

  1. In Claude Code, run:
    /plugin marketplace add pendo-io/pendo-mobile-sdk
    /plugin install pendo-mobile-sdk-tools@pendo-mobile-sdk
  2. From your app's repository, ask Claude Code to install Pendo.

If Pendo is already in your app, ask Claude Code to check your Pendo integration instead. Its doctor mode reports problems by severity and fixes only the ones you pick, on a new branch.

Claude Code doesn't update plugins from this marketplace automatically unless you turn on auto-update. To turn it on, run /plugin, open Marketplaces, select pendo-mobile-sdk, and choose Enable auto-update.

To update the skill manually, run the following command, then run /reload-plugins:

claude plugin update pendo-mobile-sdk-tools@pendo-mobile-sdk

To see what changed in each version, see the changelog on Pendo's GitHub site.

Install with Cursor or Codex

Cursor and Codex need a one-time setup. This setup downloads only the skill, not the whole repository.

  1. Clone the repository and check out the plugin folder:
    git clone --filter=blob:none --no-checkout https://github.com/pendo-io/pendo-mobile-sdk.git
    cd pendo-mobile-sdk
    git sparse-checkout set plugin
    git checkout master
  2. Create the skills folders:
    mkdir -p ~/.cursor/skills ~/.agents/skills
  3. Link the skill to your assistant. For Cursor, run:
    ln -s "$(pwd)/plugin/skills/install-pendo-mobile" ~/.cursor/skills/install-pendo-mobile
    For Codex, run:
    ln -s "$(pwd)/plugin/skills/install-pendo-mobile" ~/.agents/skills/install-pendo-mobile
  4. From your app's repository, ask your assistant to install Pendo.

If Pendo is already in your app, ask your assistant to check your Pendo integration instead. Its doctor mode reports problems by severity and fixes only the ones you pick, on a new branch.

To get future updates to the skill, run git pull in the folder you cloned. This updates the skill for both Cursor and Codex.
