Funnels Overview

A funnel is a behavioral reporting feature that allows you to measure how users move through a defined series of steps. Funnels can provide a high level of clarity as to where your visitors "drop off" when following these steps.

From there, you can put our Paths tool to work—learning where they go from that "drop off" to better build your product to keep them in that funnel.

This article reviews how to understand and create a funnel.

Create a Funnel

Within the Funnels tab, select Create a Funnel.

Enter a Name, then set your custom Visibility and Segment rules. Choose a Date Range and define the Funnel Steps to analyze. Select Create Funnel when finished.

Emulate user sessions

Pendo does not have a concept of a user "session". This is because Pendo collects user data based on "tags" that are interacted with. The best way to emulate the concept of a session is by tagging some common starting point, such as a login button or home page, then tagging a logout button.

Funnel behavior

A funnel ignores any intermediate steps between the defined funnel steps, except the entry event (which resets the visitor to the beginning of the funnel). The funnel is a prescribed sequence of Pages and/or Features.

Sequence is significant:

  • If you have a funnel definition of 1, 2, 3, 4 and a visitor performs 1, 3, 4, 2, it would only register the visitor through the second step of the funnel and then fall off.
  • If the visitor performs 1, 3, 4 they would register for the first step and then fall off.

A visitor falls out if they do not complete the funnel within the defined timeout, which is determined in the Advanced Options when editing the funnel (default value of 60 minutes). A visitor also falls out if they take longer than 60 minutes between any two steps—this timeout cannot be changed.

If a visitor enters the funnel multiple times, we will have multiple records for that visitor. Funnels may have more than one occurrence for a unique visitor.

Cross-app funnels

If you have multiple applications, you see an option to select an application as well.

In the Funnel Steps section, choose your app and a page, feature, or track event. Once selected, select + Add Step to add your option. Continue adding steps as needed—you can even choose a different web or mobile app.

Once you’ve selected all of your steps, select Create Funnel.

You should see your Funnel visualization generate with each app legend at the top of the visualization so you can correlate your page, feature, or track event with the right app.

Note: In this illustration, hovering over a step will darken the color.

Once you save your report, you can see your Funnel report type as Multiple Apps in your list of Funnels reports.
