Send Task nudges through your AI agent (beta)

Last updated:

Task nudges use Pendo behavioral data to detect when a visitor drops out of a task, then signal your AI agent to reach out and help them finish. A task is any process a visitor can start but leave before completing, for example, setting up a profile or finishing an onboarding checklist.

How it works

You define a task and the visitors it applies to on the Task nudges page. When a visitor completes some but not all of the steps within the expected time period, Pendo sends a signal to your connected agent through the webhook, and your agent sends the visitor an outbound message to re-engage them and help them finish the task.

Before you start

To create Task nudges, you need:

  • An AI agent added and connected in Agent Toolkit that supports outbound conversations through a webhook, such as Intercom Fin. To set one up, see Add and configure AI agents in Pendo.
  • A role with permission to view and configure Agent Toolkit.

Important: Proactive outbound messaging is required for Task nudges to reach visitors. For Intercom Fin, this depends on Intercom's outbound chat capability being enabled. If your agent doesn't yet support outbound conversations, you can create nudges, but they won't be delivered until that capability is turned on.

Step 1. Create a Task nudge

  1. Go to Agent Toolkit and select your agent.
  2. Open the Task nudges tab and select + Create task nudge.
  3. Enter a Name for the nudge.
  4. Optionally add a Description (up to 280 characters).
  5. Select the Application the task takes place in.
  6. Optionally choose a Segment to limit the nudge to visitors in that segment. Leave it set to All visitors to apply the nudge to everyone.
  7. Under Task, add the steps the visitor is expected to complete, in order. For each step, select the step type (for example, Page), then select the specific item. Select + Add step to add more steps.
  8. Select the guide to deliver with the Task nudge. The guide is included in the webhook payload sent to your AI agent. Only guides eligible for Agent Toolkit delivery appear in the list.
  9. Select Save.

A step counts as complete when the visitor interacts with that item, such as viewing the Page. A new Task nudge is saved with a Draft status and isn't sent to visitors until you set its status to Active.

Step 2. Manage Task nudges

The Task nudges tab lists every nudge for the agent, with its segment, number of steps, and status. A nudge can be:

  • Draft: saved but not sent to visitors.
  • Active: live and sent to matching visitors when they drop off.
  • Paused: temporarily stopped, without being deleted.

To edit a nudge or change its status, select it from the list, update the fields, and select Save. To stop a nudge without removing it, set its Status to Paused.
