Mobile guides overview

Last updated:

Guides are interactive and contextual elements within a mobile application that provide users with guidance, information, and assistance.

There are three types of mobile guides:

  • Carousels. Swipe through messages
  • Tooltips. Highlight specific features
  • Pop-ups. Full-screen, banners, polls

Carousels

Carousels are full-screen guides that allow users to move between steps using swipe gestures.

Common use cases are:

  • Onboard new users. Use carousels and tooltip tours to onboard users to the application.
  • Introduce new features. If you just had a big launch, promote all of your new capabilities with a carousel.

For more information, see Add a mobile carousel guide.

Tooltips

Tooltips are targeted to specific features. They can be part of guided walkthroughs or stand on their own.

Common use cases are:

  • Offer guided walkthroughs. Direct users on where to tap.
  • Increase feature adoption. Provide contextual guidance, and offer relevant information about specific features.

For more information, see Add a tooltip guide to your mobile app.

Pop-ups

Pop-ups are a small modal or banner that appears on the screen, overlaying the application's interface.

Common use cases are:

  • Survey your users. Launch polls to understand sentiment.
  • Send update reminders. Target users of outdated versions, and encourage them to update.
  • Show banners. Deliver non-intrusive in-app messages to promote events, discounts, best practices and much more.
