The External Content module allows you to create an iframe that points to a page on a website so that you can display external resources in the Resource Center. The External Content module follows the same publishing process as other Resource Center modules, and allows for segmentation at the module level.
Requirements
This feature requires a minimum Pendo agent version of 2.115.0.
Add an External Content module
To add an External Content module:
- In the left-side menu, select Guides > Resource Center.
- In the Resource Center list, select the required Resource Center.
- Hover over the Resource Center tile and select + Add module.
- In the Resource Center page, hover over the External website tile and select the module.
- In the bottom-right corner, select Add Modules.
Preview the website
To determine if you can create an iframe on a website, you must use the Preview function in the module in the Resource Center. If the site previews successfully, it works. If the preview doesn't work, then you can't create an iframe for the website. Some sites prevent themselves from allowing an iframe to be added. If the site doesn’t allow the iframe module to load, the frame won’t load in the preview.
To preview the website:
- Scroll to the new module, hover over it and select View Module Details.
- In the Content section, enter the URL of the website you want to add an iframe to, and select Preview URL. This checks if an iframe can be added to the selected website. If the site previews successfully, it displays in the Content section. In the preview, you can scroll through the page and experience the site the way your users would.
- After previewing the URL, select Save. The module is saved to the draft version of your Resource Center.
- In the Segment tile, select Edit and add the segment you want to target this module to.
Note: If you experience issues with the website loading in preview or are unsure whether a website works with an iframe, you can use a tool like iframely to test whether the content can be embedded in an iframe. If the tool successfully converts the content into an embeddable format, the site can work correctly with the External Content module. If the site doesn’t load, it’s likely that the content can’t be added to an iframe
Testing and publishing the External Content module
You can test the External Content module by publishing the draft to a staging environment. Select Push to Staging to confirm the module works on the staging environment.
After confirming the module is working, select Push to Production to publish the staging version to the production environment and make it public.
