After creating a guide, you can set its status, set up scheduling, and manage its activation settings through the guide's Settings tab. From the Settings page, you can also change the guide's name, preview the guide and open the Visual Design Studio to manage the guide's content. To access the guide's Settings tab, select a guide in the Guides list.
Guide information
You can edit the guide's title by selecting the title field and entering a name for the guide. If you haven't already, you can assign a Product Area and category to the guide. Use the Description field to add a description for the guide. You can edit this field to add context about the guide, such as tracking usage and sharing notes.
Guide status
The guide status can be found in the top-right corner of the Settings page.
- Public. The guide is public to all visitors targeted in the guide’s segment and appears in the designated location on all environments with Pendo installed. Public guides still appear on your designated staging servers.
- Scheduled. Displays when a start and expiration date and time to display the guide is set. When a guide reaches its expiration date and time, it stops displaying to users immediately, even if the guide still appears as Public. The guide status changes from Public to Draft shortly after the expiration date.
- Staged. The guide is only visible on your designated staging servers. Staging servers can be managed by admins of your subscription here. For more information, see Stage your guide.
- Pending Review. Designers can use this status to indicate that their guide is awaiting review. Publishers and reviewers can use this status to filter the guides list to see which guides are awaiting review.
- Draft and Disabled. The guide doesn't appear in any environment but can still be edited. While there is no functional difference between Draft and Disabled, these categories are helpful for guide organization.
- Delete. Deletes the guide and all of its data permanently.
More options
The ellipses (...) button provides access to additional details about the guide.
Permalinks
A permalink (permanent link) is a URL that points to a specific web page and is intended to remain unchanged over long periods of time, creating stability for any links you might use. You can use a permalink to display a guide on a specific page in your web app so that visitors see the guide when they open that page. For more information, see Create a guide permalink.
View edit history
Guide edit history helps you track and understand changes made to your guides by your team. For more information, see View guide edit history.
Clone guide
Cloning a guide copies all guide steps and settings into a new guide with the name "Copy of (your guide name)".
Cloning a guide can copy guides between apps in the same subscription. In a multi-app sub, select the app you want to copy the guide in the Clone guide modal. Themes can be applied and code blocks can be removed when copying if needed. Some settings can't be cloned between apps.
You can download a PDF containing all the steps in the guide.
Content
The Content section contains a preview of the guide. If you have multiple steps, you can scroll through each one without having to launch the designer.
Guide Preview
To preview your guide, select Preview or hover over your desired guide step and select the Preview icon.
After you choose Preview, enter your page URL and select Launch Designer to see a live preview.
Preview mode allows you to test your guide regardless of the segment, throttling, status, or activation method on the targeted page. If you open your preview and it doesn’t match your guide’s page target, the Wrong Page error message displays.
Navigate to the guide’s targeted page in the Preview mode to see your guide.
If you want to experience the guide exactly like your customer would, test your guide in a staging environment. For more information, see Stage your guide.
Important: If you're using Location API to transform the URL passed to Pendo, Guide Preview doesn't see the transformed URL, which can result in a misleading Wrong Page error. Instead of using Preview, you'll need to test the guide in a staging environment or in a production environment with a narrowly defined segment.
Component tiles
Below the content section are various tiles to enable you to define additional settings for your guide.
Guide Goal
Guide goals track how many visitors performed a specific action after viewing the guide. An effective guide results in more users taking the action you're directing them to.
For more information, see Set guide goals.
Activation
This tile summarizes the chosen method(s) a guide displays for a user, called the activation method. Guides can display automatically when a user opens an app or Page, through a custom badge that users click, or through a target element on an app or Page that users click. Guides can also use a combination of Automatic with Badge or Automatic with Target Element. The guide activation method is set up during guide creation and can be updated within the designer. For more information, see Guide activation options in the Visual Design Studio.
Segment
The Segment tile summarizes the guide targeting rules and the total number of eligible visitors as of today. For more information on segments, see Segments.
Scheduling
If you want the guide to start and expire at a specific date or time, set it from this tile. For more information, see Create a guide.
Localization
You can write your guide content in your preferred language and then translate it into a language supported by your subscription. There are two ways to localize your guide:
- Using AI. For more information, see Localize your guides using AI.
- Exporting the content as an XLIFF file. This is the standard format for translation data and it's translated outside of your Pendo app. For more information, see Localization.
