Suggested Features

Last updated:

The Suggested Features list in the Visual Design Studio generates recommended Feature tags for UI elements in your application that receive high engagement. It gives you an overview of how users engage with UI elements in your application and the ability to prioritize tags based on engagement data.

Functionality

Pendo detects UI elements in your application that are buttons, links, and input boxes (not the text inside of an input box) and identifies the relevant CSS for tagging these elements. Pendo then populates the Suggested Features section of the Visual Design Studio based on events indicating high engagement with these elements over the last 36 hours.

Additionally, a heatmap of your UI provides a visual display of elements in your application that Pendo has detected based on this engagement. For more information, see Feature heatmap. Note that the heatmap functionality isn't currently available for Mobile customers.

Pendo only begins processing Feature data after you've tagged it. Suggested Features haven't been tagged or processed yet. You can't see full retroactive analytics and you can't use suggested Features in reports or tagging until after suggested Features are accepted (tagged) and data processing is complete.

You can either accept and finish creating a suggested Feature or delete it. For instructions, see Accept or delete suggestions in this article.

Prerequisites

  • Pendo admin users to enable settings and accept tags.
  • Suggested Features enabled in your application settings.

Review suggested Features

Find the Suggested Features table in the Visual Design Studio, which you can open by navigating to Product > Features and then selecting Tag Features in the top-right corner of the screen. Choose Tag side-by-side to see a more complete list of suggestions without scrolling in the Visual Design Studio. For information about side-by-side mode, see Tagging with the Visual Design Studio.

Open the Suggested Features tab for a list of untagged Features that appeared in your events in the previous 36 hours for both public and staging environments. If a UI element isn't used in the last 36 hours, it disappears from the list until it's used again.

Hover over items in the list to see what elements they correspond to in your application. Elements corresponding with a suggested Feature are highlighted as you hover over each one in the Suggested Features table.

Turn on the heatmap using the toggle at the bottom of the Visual Design Studio for a visual representation of how much engagement each of the suggested Features has received. You can select a heatmap item to highlight it in the suggested Features list. For more information, see Feature heatmap.

The data you see in the Suggested Features list can be different from the data you see when you tag them to add them to your Features list. This is because suggested Features includes data from both your public and staging environments, whilst tagged Features include data only from your public environment.

Accept or delete suggestions

Before making a decision to accept or delete a suggestion, select the suggested Feature from the list to see what UI element you'd be tagging and how much usage that UI element has gotten. The suggested Feature is bounded in a solid red line. Before accepting or deleting a suggestion, we recommend the following:

  1. Consider the engagement with the suggested Feature. Turn on the heatmap and hover over the suggested Feature for a color-based indication of visitor engagement with the UI element. For more information, see Feature heatmap.
  2. View the suggested Feature's details. Select Tag next to the suggested Feature in the table to see its details. Select Cancel to go back to the list of suggested Features without tagging the one you're currently viewing.

Accept a suggestion

To accept the suggested Feature, select Tag at the end of the suggested Feature's row, and then review and edit the following as appropriate:

  1. Edit the name. Suggested Features provide a simple default name based on the underlying HTML. You can change the name to something else or keep the default name.
  2. Add a Pendo Page. This is left blank by default. If the relevant Page doesn't yet exist in Pendo, select Tag Page under Page location.
  3. Add a product area. This is left blank by default.
  4. When you're done, select Save in the bottom-right corner of the Visual Design Studio. This moves the rule into the Features list with a processing status. Processing can take up to an hour.

Delete a suggestion

To delete the suggested Feature, select the trash icon at the end of the suggested Feature's row. This removes the suggested Feature from the list and doesn't suggest the Feature again. Deleted suggestions don't reappear in the list, but can be created manually following the instructions outlined in Feature tagging.
