How do upcoming changes in SDK certificate validation affect my Android app?

Last updated:

The Google certificate transparency service used in certificate validation for our SDK is changing.  As this is a free service, we have no control over the changes but are partnering with Google on this issue. Google is committed to making certificate transparency enforcement easier on Android in the future.

In light of the planned changes, we highly recommend that you upgrade any Android application that uses any version of the Pendo SDK to the latest 3.x version, or at least to version 2.21.1.

What do I need to do?

Update your Android app to the latest 3.x version, or at least to version 2.21.1, and release it to the Google Play Store.

Is there a workaround?

Unfortunately, there is no workaround this time.

What happens if we don’t do this?

This is a mandatory update for any Android app. Your app might still work in the meantime but because Google’s certificate transparency used by Pendo SDKs and plugins will stop later this year, on an undetermined date by Google, the certificate transparency might stop working, which means Pendo might stop working in your app.

Is there a security risk?

There is no security risk for a device running an older version of the Android mobile SDK.

Note: Any additional questions can be directed to Pendo’s support team via the Resource Center.
